Bank of America Tower, Atlanta’s tallest and most recognized skyscraper, featuring a signature “golden” spire, was recently revitalized using, among other materials, over 1100 sheets of Chemetal 936 Champagne Aluminum.
This Chemetal design is featured throughout the new lobby plaza, deftly connecting to the buildings “golden” identity and offering a satisfying hospitality style warmth to the expansive 24,000 square foot lobby.
Curved slat metal panels arc overhead, covering the 40 foot ceilings and archways. Large 4 x 10 foot panels wrap beams while metal clad low ceilings call out cafe and quiet areas. “We knew this project was happening well over a year ago when the material was sourced” says Chemetal Creative Director and President Geoff Schaefer. “We are so excited to see what a great job the team at Gensler, as well as millwork teams across the country, accomplished. We’re proud to have our materials be part of such a grand and wondrous project.”
Chemetal #936 Champagne Aluminum is an anodized aluminum that’s part of Chemetal’s Classic Metals, which include popular HPL (700 Series) and solid anodized (900 Series) metals. It features an elegant “long grain” metal brushing, akin to a stainless appearance, albeit with a lighter brass color tone (the anodizing process is protective and also allows color to be added to metal surface). #936 is sourced domestically from a longtime supplier.
One of the biggest challenges in projects this large is ensuring consistent metal tone throughout. It was about 15,000 pounds of anodized aluminum, a reliable, lightweight and affordable material easily fabricated by design professionals.

Chemetal #936 Champagne Aluminum is one of many brass designs, and one of myriad metal designs offered by Chemetal, a second generation family-owned company that’s been in business for over 50 years.
Do projects like this mean the office is back? “Sure, maybe, who really knows,” says Schaefer, “It definitely means I’m going to check out this office building next time I’m in Atlanta.”
